Executive Summary & Core Philosophy
College Preparation & Program Systems
- College Alignment: Number system, signal structures, and tactical sets mirror high-level college programs for an immediate transition to the next level.
- Coaching Flexibility: Universal baseline system across Canada Futures, while head coaches retain autonomy to tailor numbers to personnel and matchups.
- Wristband Cards: Players receive wristband inserts with play numbers. Instant recognition and immediate execution are prioritized over rote memorization.
Speed & Game Pressure
- "Speed Never Slumps": Aggressive baserunning forces continuous stress on opposing infields.
- Mathematical Advantage: Home-to-first takes ~3.0s. Out requires 5 consecutive actions: pitch → catch → throw → catch → tag. Fast baserunners force errors by making defense play faster than practice speed.
- Defensive Space vs. Time: Against slappers/fast runners, defense cannot get time back; defenders must take away space by creeping in and shading gaps.
A silent defense is an error-prone defense. Continuous vocal chatter between pitcher, catcher, and infielders between pitches is mandatory. Catchers are actively empowered to manage pitchers and participate in/take over pitch calling.
Offensive Strategy & Play Calling System
The Number Calling Code Structure
Coaches flash sequences of 3 (or 4) digits:
| Digit Position | Role | Decryption Rule |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Digit | On / Off Indicator | Even (2, 4, 6, 8) = PLAY IS ON Odd (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) = PLAY IS OFF / DECOY |
| 2nd Digit | Decoy | Disregard completely (filler number). |
| 3rd Digit | The Action / Play | The designated play number to execute (see Play Menu below). |
| 4th Digit (Optional) | Bunt Direction | 1 = First base side | 3 = Third base side |
Offensive Play Menu (Action Numbers 1 – 8)
Wristband ReferenceSacrifice Bunt
Square early, bat out in front of the plate. Ball must be on the ground in fair territory. Popping up is unacceptable.
Base-Hit / Sneaky Bunt
For fast hitters or when defenders are deep. Show late, drop softly, and beat the throw to 1st base.
Late Swing (Steal Protection)
Used on steal plays. As pitch hits catcher's glove, batter takes late swing across zone to obstruct transfer/throw or draw catcher's interference.
Slap Bunt / Slap
For left and right-handed slappers. Drive ball hard on the ground through gaps rather than soft taps when runners are in scoring position.
Hit and Run
Baserunner steals on pitch. Batter must make contact and put ball on ground to avoid line-drive double plays and exploit vacated holes.
Fake Bunt & Take
Show genuine sacrifice bunt to draw corner infielders forward, then pull bat back smoothly to take pitch. Creates stolen base lanes.
Fake Slap Bunt / Drag Bunt
Show slap movement, pull back, and drop a late bunt to catch moving defenders off balance.
Squeeze Play
Runner on 3rd sprints home on the pitch. Batter's sole responsibility is to make contact and get ball on ground in fair territory.
Baserunning System & Tactical Signals
Steal Indicators (Outs Signal Position)
- 1 Hand Above: Straight Steal
- 2 Hands Above: Delayed Steal (runner breaks late to draw throw to 2nd, allowing R3 to score or triggering rundown)
Routine situation reminder. Runner confirms by flashing outs below waist to 3B coach.
"Ball Angle" / "Ball Angle Down" Rule
Execution: On any downward contact (ground ball), runner from 3rd runs home immediately on contact.
Rationale: Forces maximum pressure on infielder to field cleanly, throw home, and apply tag. If thrown out, coaches assume full responsibility.
Critical Baserunning Directives
If you blow past the 3rd base coach, keep running home. Any stop calls are for trailing runners, not lead runner.
Always anticipate taking the extra base; never assume clean fielding. Take aggressive, banana-shaped turns.
Bench players must be loudly vocal on every pitch, identifying and calling opponent bunts and steals instantly.
Pitch Calling & Location Grid
Pitching Philosophy
Primary objective: Weak Contact in 1–3 pitches rather than wasting high-strikeout counts.
1. Pitch Type (First Signal)
2. Location Zones (Second Signal — Catcher's View)
3. Expanding the Zone (0-2 / 1-2 Waste)
Repeat pitch type number to call chase distance off plate:
2-4: Changeup, Low-Out (in zone)2-4-2: Changeup, Low-Out, 1 ball off2-4-2-2: Changeup, Low-Out, 2 balls off
4. Elevation Hand Adjustments
- Hand Raised: Elevate pitch higher in zone.
- Hand Lowered: Work lower in zone.
- Triple Pump (1-2-3): Bounce in dirt / below zone.
5. First-and-Third Sequence
- 1st Pitch: Look for strike (low & away or up & away for rapid catcher transfer).
- 2nd Pitch: Planned pitch-out.
Defensive Systems & Coverage
Catcher 1st-and-3rd Signals ("First Touch System")
Catcher sets up in front of plate and touches gear. The first touch dictates the coverage:
| First Touch Location | Defensive Execution |
|---|---|
| Left Shoulder | Pickoff to 3rd Base — Catcher throws immediately to 3B. |
| Right Shoulder | Pickoff to 1st Base — Catcher throws immediately to 1B. |
| Top of Helmet | Full Throw to 2nd Base — Shortstop covers bag for the tag. |
| Face Mask | Short Throw to 2nd Base — 2nd Baseman cuts in front of bag to intercept throw and look for runner breaking home from 3rd. |
| Chest Protector | Snap Throw to Pitcher — Head height; pitcher catches and spins toward 3rd base. |
Team Bunt & Slap Defenses
Default Bunt Defense
Used: Default set unless another defense is called.
- 1B, 3B, Pitcher, Catcher: Aggressively crash to field bunt.
- 2B: Rotates over to cover 1st Base.
- SS: Rotates over to cover 2nd Base.
- Retreat Rule: Whichever between Pitcher and 3B does not field ball immediately retreats to 3rd Base ("I've got bag!").
1B Stays Back
Used: Runners on 1st, or 1st & 2nd (neutralizes steals, eliminates long run for 2B).
- 1B: Stays back on 1st Base bag (unless ball sharply bunted down line).
- Pitcher, 3B, Catcher: Field the bunt.
- 2B: Covers 2nd Base.
- SS: Covers 3rd Base.
Slap Defense
Used: Against fast slap hitters to take away time and space.
- 3B & SS: Creep in closer to home plate.
- SS Shift: Cheats to right into 5-6 hole to field balls forehand rather than backhand.
Field Awareness & Defensive Principles
- A — Assess: Situation, count, outs, runners.
- K — Know: Plan on forehand vs. backhand.
- P — Prepare: Pre-pitch creep and active stance.
- P — Perform: Clean execution.
Complete tags and immediately look for trailing runners advancing. Never look at the umpire or complain about calls while the ball is live.
Outfielders must sprint to back up bases on every single ground ball and throw. Backups prevent extra bases against elite college and international teams.
